That's a Wrap

Danish designer Rene Gurskov had his Palestinian scarves started as a quick styling trick back in 2004. It was purposely created for the model and photographer’s demand to add on a press shoot, but eventually, it spread out across Copenhagen and everyone seemed to like it. Giving you a little bit of info, the Palestinian scarves were actually there on the streets and were an issue since the seventies. Thanks to Gurskov’s artistic creativity, he formally debuted his infamous sequin-decorated scarves through a collection back in 2005 and with a tremendous outcome; it became a first global bestseller for the brand.

The new collection of scarves have gone through interesting collaborations with leading graphic designers around the world that include Lars Johansen, Char Alonzo, Ron Wan, Leon Jorgensen, Michael Christensen, and WEIS. For Spring/Summer 2011 comes another set of wonderful designs. Adding to an already eccentric print collection is a series of mesh scarves combined with the signature sequin stylings:

Vivienne Westwood Anglomania + Lee Release Next Collection

With the first Vivienne Westwood + Lee collaborative collection proving to be a massive success, the next collection looks set to be just as popular. With a range that pays homage to the über cool combination of bikers, rockers and festivals, the garments are loaded with embellishments such as embroidered badges and patches which feature heavily on the denim waistcoats and jeans. The menswear collection comprises of six styles of jeans as well as four different tops.

The Bondage Jean featuring Westwood’s signature zip crotch detail, the Classic Jean and Low Crotch Jean are popular styles that have been carried over from the previous season while the Overall Jean and the Mechanic Jean are developments of a loose-fit banana leg and a slim cut fit respectively. The Mayfair Jean, an all new smarter style, consists of a flat front and front iron pleats developed from traditional tailored Savile Row trousers.

The designs focus heavily on fabrics and washes. There is the classic indigo denim with selvage as well as a vintage wash but also an over-dyed blood red finish on drill. Denims have been paint splattered, cut and repaired or patched with slogans to give a lived in look. A metallic hologram print on denim injects the collection with a psychedelic touch reminiscent of 70’s rock’n’roll.

T-shirts are on offer as well as a rocker’s denim waistcoat while the classic denim shirt has been given a classic Westwood twist with the placket skewed to the side and an asymmetric collar. In all, the collection a chic yet utterly wearable concoction courtesy of the perfectly matched collaboration of two labels.

Diesel has launched a revolutionary new denim that in 30 days, will adapt to the way you wear your jeans and imprints the way you live your life onto in.

An exclusive partnership between the iconic denim brand and ISKO™, the world’s leading denim manufacturer, has inspired the creation "TurbotechTM". The ISKO™ patented TurbotechTM technology means denim can now evolve to fit the body’s movements, adapting to the wearer’s lifestyle. To launch their new Turbo Denim range, Diesel have issued the public with a challenge to help tell the technological story of Turbo Denim in a fun, engaging way and in classic Diesel style.
For 30 days, each purchaser of a pair of Turbo Denim jeans is encouraged to become part of the challenge: namely, how messed up, worn in and roughed up can you get your Turbo Denim’s, and what/where and how you wore them to get them looking like this.....
Each pair of jeans will come with a zip card which will act as a guide or checklist of ways to help 'vintage customize' your jeans - 30 tasks for 30 days.

You can photograph your best efforts and upload them to facebook.com or visit www.diesel.com. The most innovative and imaginative methods will be in the draw for one of Diesels amazing prizes!!

Interview: The Men and Women of Marc Jacobs

Brian Bowen Smith may not be a house-hold name but he has the force and vision to rival the more celebrated artisans in photography. A celebrity portraiture by day, Bowen Smith is the man behind the lens in the photo book, The Men and Women of Marc Jacobs which documents a selection of Marc Jacob's staff from marketing executives to store assistants. Speaking to Dan Hasby-Oliver on a whirlwind tour of the world, Bowen Smith lets 7th Man Magazine Digital into his world of sex, photo's and what makes a great employee.

Dan Hasby-Oliver: How did you come to do the book?

Brian Bowen Smith: I do celebrity portraiture, and I just go to the stores, particularly in LA and I would say to the guys, “You look so cool today, you look amazing – come with me”, So I got them to go against a white wall at the back of the store and just shot it. I knew it would be a cool, great photo which I don't get to do. So I did more, and then went on a trip to Savannah, Georgia where I spend Christmas and New Years with Robert Duffy (Marc Jacobs President) every year and showed him these pictures and said to him, “Look at these pictures of your employees, they are f******g amazing, how do you do it?” And it was he who suggested we do a book, so I tagged along around the world two or three times and just started shooting – just like that. I would say to someone, “I love your look” or, “Throw that dress on” then, “Come with me”, but they would be helping someone and I would wait until they were done and that was it.

I have to say that Marc Jacobs staff are hot, would you say that is an integral part of the business, like Abercrombie and Fitch?

I think the difference is that they are all hot, unique and very creative. But them as people, they are inspiring, they work their asses off and they are devoted to this company. Devoted. If they are told to work all night long to get the store done, they are not questioning it and that combination is unheard of.

They live the brand?

Yes, they live the brand. They look at it as an opportunity to do better in life, not like where you work at The GAP because you need a job. They all have aspirations and they are all creative, even if you want to be a rock star your going to meet a lot more musicians where you can swap and share ideas and experiences.

There is a guy in the book who must be a model, how do you think he differs from a guy from A&F?

The thing with Abercrombie and Fitch is that you could pick one of those guys or girls up from anywhere, but with Marc Jacobs you have diversity. You have a black girl, a Chinese girl, an American girl who can be a model, a singer, an actress and I think the depth of those people are far greater. At Ambercrombie and Fitch you got to be good looking and have some abs, I like that a Marc Jacobs person you would walk by the store and think, “That guy is cool as s**t”.

Where do you think you found the best models?

Every store had something great to offer, it was amazing but it wasn't a case of saying, “Oh, she is beautiful”, it's better as it was about the photo. Everyone is not beautiful but it was what they bought to the table. There was one girl who kept saying to me she wasn't beautiful but I told her she was gorgeous, but I wasn't there to tell her other wise but just to get the photo and judge after. I know what I'm going to get from it, but afterwards she was blown away.

I have been to many a store and found most of the staff incredible with a laid back attitude, do you think that is a common factor?

It's like that all over the world – Russia, same thing. Copenhagen, same thing. That vibe you describe, you get that everywhere. Each store has all the same people, but just different which is amazing.

Would you say they are hired on that basis?

No, you get hired because you are right for the job because you are interesting, can talk to people, be a good sales person and you're going to want to be there. And the truth is, for me as a photographer that is important.

I have always had a good laugh with the staff at this store and the stores in New York, do you find the same?

Yes, every store you go to I have found the staff super approachable, but at what other store can you walk in and tell them your a photographer, working with Robert and Marc, and tell them you are doing a book. Each store is the same, like in this store I asked a guy to pull his pants down and sit on a toilet and he did it unfazed.

I have a couple of the Dolce and Gabbana Calcio books of the Italian football team but it's nothing like this book, why is that?

It's different because it's all laid out also it's all done with lights professionally, but this is done just around the back of a store or in a field. Theirs is done the proper way which I love to do, which I do for my living but this was fun because you said, “Dude, just stand up there and this is going to be fun as we might get in trouble for running inside someone's back yard”, and if they came out we would run which was exciting and we would jump in the car like teenagers smoking cigarettes. It really was brilliant.

Has this been one of the most exciting projects of your career?

This is the best project I have ever done in my life and I find it hard to believe I am going to find a better one and this raises the bar not just for me but no doubt for other people. It's so hard to come up with an idea no one has ever done but I have never seen a book on employees done like this, I never have. Ever. And I hope that it does exist but to come up with something new like that was very exciting. I could do a bunch of nudes of celebrities or models but that's done a billion times.

'The Men and Women of Marc Jacobs' is self published in a limited run, and is available now from Marc Jacobs stores worldwide. Images courtesy of Marc Jacobs.

Become A Designer Of Burberry?

It is often said that, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' but Burberry is giving its customers the chance to challenge the brand into designing their own iconic trench from early next year.

The exciting online bespoke service will give customers the chance to choose from a gargantuan selection of 12 million options. This will include buttons, lapel styles, belting, studding, epaulets, fabric and colour with every style - runway and mainline - being included in the service. Some of the most iconic styles will be chopped and changed but will it destroy the image, and perhaps the reputation, of the trench? Christopher Bailey's consistent touch of success to the brand may reassure die-hard customers but what ever the outcome, it will be a wise investment for everyone involved, mostly for the customer.

Whilst bespoke services are not new, most notably provided by Savile Row and Jermyn Street tailors for shirts and suits, being online marks a new era for what is essentially couture. However Burberry is no stranger to online and social media platforms, having crossed the threshold on their Facebook page with 2 million fans. But it is the iconic trench that captured the imagination of the world, as their dedicated site, 'The Art of the Trench', where users could 'like' and 'comment' on shots taken by The Sartorialist Scott Schuman, was a world-wide hit. Teaming up with Facebook for the Autumn 2009 project paved the way for other designers to fully engage their social media using clients and fans, and advertising their streaming fashion shows showed others that they are a brand that captures the hearts, imagination and wallets of the fashion pack and its hangers on.

A Different Kind Of Retail Experience

Since luxury menswear boutique Hostem opened its doors on Shoreditch’s Redchurch Street this summer, this quiet enclave has been subtly shifting the London retail landscape. Shunning the in-your-face attitude of many pop-ups and “concept” stores of late, Hostem possesses a rather more modest philosophy as it strives to cater to “a considered, fashion literate gentleman who demands a sense of depth and variety to his retail experience”.

In order to succeed in this ideal, Hostem enlisted the assistance of designers-of-the moment JAMESPLUMB who very much poured their signature “love-worn” aesthetic into the interiors of this store. Exposed light bulbs illuminate features such as reclaimed wooden floorboards, masterfully reworked mirrors and plump bookshelves lined with various bric-a-brac. Together with a chandelier that erupts with mini lamp shades, such accents all add to a thoroughly “rough luxe” feel that brings to the fore-front the character and individuality of Hostem. As the store touts it “Think Dickens with a dash of Dali humor”.

Of course, the crucial component of this boutique comes in the form of the rich collection of avant-garde fashion juxtaposed with street-luxe menswear pieces. Home to labels such as Casey-Hayford, Visvim and Adam Kimmel, Hostem provides the ultimate selection for the fashion conscious men of today.

Consisting of three adjoining rooms, the store offers a carefully structured retail experience. The first room is dotted with concrete plinths that display footwear and homes the Hostem essentials, be it the draped Damir Doma t-shirt or the bewitching fragrance of the Melograno bath oil from Santa Maria Novella. The next port-of-call is the considerably more intimate space devoted to garments of a rather more niche and art-directional disposition with the likes of Ann Demeulemeester and Augusta featuring throughout. The third room, however, is a concept unique to the store, where visiting designers are invited to take up residence on a short term basis.

The latest addition to this space, which shall be launched in the next few weeks, is the innovative showcase entitled The Dr Romanelli Prescription Shoppe, curated by Dr. Romanelli. What’s more, a new basement room has now officially opened, a space which shall centre on the more streetwear labels such as Visvim, Mastermind Japan and Anachronorm along with several brands that have not been available outside of Japan before, all exclusive to Hostem.

Ultimately, this is one retail experience that shall have the masses flooding east to sample the sartorial delights this store proudly offers.

The Godfather of Street Art

Richard Hambleton has experienced a notoriety like no other since he initially rose to fame in the early 1980's. Making his mark on the streets of New York, San Francisco, Berlin, Paris, London and Japan, Hambleton's visually arresting public art, most notably his Shadowman and Crime Scene series, has played heavy influence on street artists Blek Le Rat and Banksy.

As the last influential surviving member of the East Village Art Movement, Hambleton -who has often been heralded as the "Godfather of Street Art"- has led a relatively reclusive life for the past twenty years and yet has still managed to retain a constant presence on the art scene. With past works having been exhibited in the likes of The MoMa and The Houston Museum of Fine Art, Hambleton's latest venture sees him becoming the subject of new exhibition in collaboration with fashion power house Giorgio Armani. Curated by Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld and Andy Valmorbida, the exhibition shall feature 45 works (25 of which have never been seen before) and shall open at The Dairy on the 18th of November. Joining forces with Armani through a shared drive of "Individual passion and creativity", the exhibition shall continue until December 3rd.

Of the exciting collaboration Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld and Andy Valmorbida say: "Richard Hambleton’s brush stroke as an artist is genius and is in a league of its own. Most significantly, he is the most important and influential living street artist in the world today, with a story and career that is unparalleled. It is also a privilege for us to collaborate again with Giorgio Armani and we’re pleased to present it in such a prestigious space."

A Savage Beauty

The Costume Institute's gala at the Metropolitan Museum in New York is a fashion exhibition like no other. Each year, the world's media waits with bated breath to dissect the threads donned by the high-profile guests in attendance of each event, while the exhibition itself is one met with much anticipation. Next year's offering however, has already received a massive surge of interest as it was revealed today that they shall be celebrating the career of the late, great Alexander McQueen with an intimate retrospective entitled: Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty.

Taking place from May 4th through to July 31st, 2011, the exhibition will showcase all of his work, right from his Central Saint Martins postgrad collection from 1992, straight through to his final runway presentation unveiled shortly after his untimely death last February. The tribute will be an intimate portrayal of the iconic designer through his designs which have been categorized into a number recurring themes and concepts:

The Savage Mind will examine his subversion of traditional tailoring and dressmaking practices through displacement and deconstruction.
Romantic Gothic will highlight McQueen’s narrative approach to fashion and illuminate his engagement with Romantic literary traditions such as death, decay, and darkness. It will also reveal the main characters of his collections, including femme fatales and anti-heroes such as pirates and highwaymen.
Romantic Nationalism will look at McQueen’s fascination with the distant past.
Romantic Exoticism will examine his focus on distant places.
Romantic Primitivism will explore McQueen’s engagement with the ideal of the “noble savage.”

What's more, the exhibition will include videos of McQueen's runway presentations, reveal an assortment of “atavistic and fetishized objects,” including collaborations with Philip Treacy and Shaun Leane on display in a “Cabinet of Curiosities" and shall also feature an interview with Alexander McQueen's creative director, Sarah Burton. To accompany the exhibition, Costume Institute curators Andrew Bolton and Harold Koda are compiling a book, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty in homage to the designer.

When asked about the work of McQueen, Andrew Bolton puts it best; “Alexander McQueen was best known for his astonishing and extravagant runway presentations, which were given dramatic scenarios and narrative structures that suggested avant-garde installation and performance art. His fashions were an outlet for his emotions an expression of the deepest, often darkest, aspects of his imagination. He was a true romantic in the Byronic sense of the word — he channeled the sublime.”

A New Store In Town

When the secret reputation of Shoredtich in east London being an achingly cool, creative hub became mainstream, many fled further east. So it is no surprise that one of London's scrappiest areas, Dalston, is seeing rise to one of London's hottest new boutiques; LN-CC.

Stepping out from the virtual world into the real, a former boxing gym will soon become their highly polished, avant-garde concept store designed Gary Card. Commissioned by Creative Director John Skelton and partner Dan Mitchell, visitors will enter the store only to navigate themselves through a 'deconstructed' forest onto which they will end up in a wooden tunnel that represents 'the belly of a beast'. This adventure playground of retail is an interesting concept which Card has put an incredible amount of thought into, which reflects his creative thinking and artistic talent as a set designer.

The 6,000-square foot space, divided into seven different rooms, will have their own distinct atmosphere with a different tone and figurative temperature. With a mix of organic, industrial, warm and cold the main attraction of the store is the private club space which hosts a vintage sound system by Mickey Boyle - a name that is legendary within the club industry. However, another enticing feature will be a library with asymmetrical shelving that holds a diverse, rare and interesting titles often unseen in many other cities.

As for the fashion? They currently stock some of the biggest designers in the world such as Rick Owens, Raf Simons, Levi's and Vans, as well as some incredible new, young designers such as J W Anderson, Damir Doma and Mr. Olive. The selection is growing yet will see such pieces suspended on mannequins or just presented in an incredible space. It shall be hard not to be tempted to buy one piece, at least. But even if you don't it doesn't seem to bother LN-CC; "We don't care if you come here and don't actually buy anything - we are happy for you to take what ever you want from this, whether it be product, information or knowledge".

LN-CC is currently available online at ln-cc.com and the store will be open 'shortly'.

On Trend: The Moustache

The moustache. In the past, this defiant look has been subject to much debate, but now is experiencing somewhat of a renaissance. Once a look usually reserved for balding policemen or (on the contrary) dictators of late, the humble moustache has now once again regained the stylish sophistication often associated with old school Hollywood glamour. With thespians such as Brad Pitt and Daniel Craig channeling Clark Gable with their own variant of the stylized facial hair, the moustache has also invaded the fashion scene with models having sported the look on the pages of 7TH MAN.

Now the moustache is making new name for itself as a symbol of good with the global charity initiative, Movember. Currently in full swing, Movember sees over one million participants grow a moustache over the course of the month to raise funds and awareness in aid of men's health.

Naturally, growing a moustache does require some initial thought. After all, this is one look that can go horribly wrong. And while growing a handle-bar style 'tache may be all well and good for comic effect, we say it's best stick with a more sleek, modern style.

Check out the ultimate grooming kit for this trend of the moment:
