Selfridges Windows Spring 2010

If you haven't been to Selfridges yet this season, I am sure due to business circumstances like many of us, you will be in for a special treat. The shop windows have had a musical makeover with windows based on songs from Florence and The Machine, Dizze Rascal, Hot Chip, Empire of the Sun, Paloma Faith, The XX, and Marina And The Diamonds. The stores most ambitious project to date!

Passers-by will have the chance to guess the songs which inspired the other windows at the London and Manchester stores via Selfridges new website.

A closer look below at Hot Chip's window (by Pete Fowler) which is design after the 'I Feel Better' tune.

SARTIE - a return to Italian heritage craftsmanship.

According to Sartie founders Matteo de Rosa and Marco Pastori, their brand of luxury leather goods, SARITE, is the new verb for ‘no boasting’. With Sartie, (reminiscent of brands like Bottega Veneta), the boys are confidently hoping that pure quality and craftsmanship will do more for their branding than any logo ever could. Matteo de Rosa and Marco Pastori have aimed to reintroduce a bespoke quality previously only seen pre-mass marketing/branding circus we find ourselves in today.

Using the finest leather, (ethically sourced), and embellishments that beg to be caressed, (think 100% suede lining, patent leather trim details and hand finished brass tokens), the boys have managed to subtly express what fine Italian leather craftsmanship is all about – confidence in design, surprisingly practical, and moreover, very very chic. Standout designs are the Men’s Shopper (SH002) - for the city man on track to take on the world, the Tirade (SFT003) - the one for the man who likes his overnight bag more on the sophisticated side, and finally the Tubolare – a ‘gym-to-weekend’ tote that would have even the most discerning members of Chelsea’s KX Gym drooling with envy. http://www.sartie.it/

Tweed Run 2010

One of the daily pleasures in life, is that morning and evening's moments when you feel the wind blowing your hair, and everything seems to be right with the world. And, if you're anything like the 7thMan, clothing organization is top priority.

United by the love of old English attire and cycling, the Tweed Run which was organized last month in London, attracted quite the turnout. Judging from the images one can mistake the decade, yet there is no denying the love for early 20th century British cycling outfits with matching vintage bikes.

The inaugural Tweed Run took place last year in London. Borrowing the name from the emblematic woolen fabric coming out of Scotland, this enjoyable event pays homage to fashion, cycling and of course the classic English spirit of the early 20th century.400 participants took part in the 12 mile excursion around the city which began at the Rootstein Hopkins Parade Grounds at the Chelsea College of Art & Design. Going the whole nine yards, a tea break was even scheduled at Kensington Gardens where riders got to enjoy some classical tunes from three-piece strong orchestra. Proving all to be a much Success!

Americans fret not, the Tween Run will be coming to Toronto and New York this coming Fall!!

Io Sono L’Amore - (I Am Love) - a film by Luca Guadagnino.

‘The film is about a woman, named Emma, aged between 40 and 50, who doesn't generate wealth or culture. Her husband Tancredi, a rich manufacturer from North Italy, picked her for her beauty, just as he would have chosen a piece of artwork. Emma is a piece of property; she had children and she fulfilled her role and now she finds herself at that point in life when the cage, the prison she has been living in, vividly appears before her eyes with all its explicit drama. Emma comes from a cage, Russia, that she left in the pre-Gorbachev era to have access to the free world. And in the free world she locked herself up in another cage, the family, and lies. Change, overcoming the idea of one’s self, as created by society, has been one of my main interests since Orlando. In Io Sono L’Amore, a film that Luca and I worked on for 7 years, these themes are presented, and they are in a way that is even more magnetic.’- Tilda Swinton on her character Emma Recchi,

I AM LOVE does not follow the standard Hollywood plot pattern; rather it reverts to the classier showcase of raw emotion and hyper stylisation often found in the films of yesteryear. The mood it sets lingers on long after it’s heart pounding finale, and with current fashion trend leaning towards traditional and heritage, this film, along with its exquisite make-up and costume design hits the mark flawlessly. With nods to Hermes and Valentino amongst others, fashion plays a role only second to high emotion; by fastidious set design, it also manages to make a grey, largely industrial city like Milan look seductive, menacing, and romantic. Tilda’s other-worldly attraction often lends to ‘ice-queen’ comments from reviewers, but contrary to that, her portrayal of a mother torn apart by family secrets and a newly ignited lust for her son’s best friend allows her to thankfully break that mold. Ice queen? No any more. Fashion icon? Always. Actress? We Are In Love.

'My genius is in my nostrils' - Nietzsche.

Billed as a 'playground for the nose', the Le Labo Olfactionary aims to challenge what we know about the complex structures that make up our favourite scents. Included are 40 of the purest scents used in fine fragrance production, along with professional blotting wands and a comprehensive fragrance guide. Flirting with one bottle then another, I discovered my interests lay within the woods and animalics; it also seems I have an unusual penchant for civet. I was fascinated by how 'true' and elegant scents are that I would have previously dismissed as insipid. No3 (Lilly of the Valley), and No6 (Iris) stood out as examples. In their purity, they lacked the sharp, nostril burning sweetness I was expecting, but offered something rather more earthy, mellow and comforting. It seems that when going to their depth, there are fragrances you'll like that you certainly wouldn't have entertained before. Like all of Le Labo, the packaging is simple, functional, and attractive in a old-school science lab sort of way, and although the sample scents are not designed to be worn on your person, you can be sure that your next fragrance purchase will be based on personal experience and insight that few fragrance junkies are able to say they've had. http://www.lelabofragrances.com/

Gant Rugger on Bleecker Street

This past week, Gant Rugger opened its first retail shop on Bleecker Street, New York. Rugger, which is the younger hipper brother to Swedish label Gant choose the perfect location, now downtowners will not have to travel too far.

Recently, Gant has gotten much attention, greatly due to Michael Bastian's collection. But, Rugger will surely make its own buzz bringing ivy-vintage inspired wear. The label's prices-"shirts retail for $125, knit polos for $75, sweaters for $125, pants for $125-$175, shorts $90-$125, and jackets for $225-$495." says WWD.

Bleecker Street is quickly becoming this seasons men's destination for shopping. Two weeks ago, Freemans Sporting Club debuted its WestVillage location, the week before that, news broke out the new Marc Jacobs shop will be replacing Biography Bookshop. And, pretty soon, A.P.C., the home of all that is sweet and French and denim, will be joining the retail mix. Making Bleecker the hottest street!

MAY DAY MAY DAY.

Aspinal of London's Gentlemen's Umbrella in Navy Regimental is a worthy competitor in the rain accessory trade, an accessory that will out live your saddle shoes without even trying. It's elegant stripes and sturdy frame are sure to catch even the most weather weary eye.

Fulton's Huntsman umbrella in classic black is another worthy competitor for the attention of your hand, steel frame and dark wooden handle combine to create somewhat of a timeless addition to any a - dry clean only - ensemble.

New Moon an American cult shop also do a bit of a gothic take on the classic umbrella with a carved resin handle resembling something of the occult, which I have an inkling may well seduce a large proportion of style savvy men, it is a bit of wild card though, even in this morbid climate.

OR we could all wait to be dry until next winter when Carlo Pignatelli's feather lined umbrella is made available to the generally well off public.... I do hope it catches on. There is nothing like impractical Italian flamboyance to brighten a dull, pouring day in grey Britain.

The men of Britain are surely in need of some dapper umbrellas what with London's recent trend for continuous torrential rain.

I have taken it upon myself to display some of the finest rain shields that money can by, none of these fold away nickel and nylon brolly's, but a work of art, which both compliments an already terrific outfit, whilst keeping it dry, (because no one enjoys soggy fabric).

Sirtuin - The Fountain of Youth?

Seven years ago scientists were still hypothesising about the life-extending abilities of a group of enzymes called sirtuins. Present in almost all living cells, these enzymes (in a nutshell) control whether your cell decides to A) commit suicide, or B) take a deep breath, repair its DNA, and go on living a fuller and happier life. Cells that live longer are clearly going to make skin look younger, and the powers that be immediately began to work on unlocking sirtuin's age defying secrets. Fast forward several years and those geniuses at REN Skincare seem to have done it again. By activating these sirtuin enzymes with an extract found in rice, they are able to keep them happy and super-productive - in turn, meaning you get to keep the beautiful skin you’ve got for longer. Throw in a powerful line eraser (a patented hexapeptide-11), a hydrating miracle molecule (hyaluronic acid) and an awesomely high level of skin brightening vitamin C, and you have a tag team that packs a pretty powerful punch. After only three weeks my skin is better hydrated, much brighter, and I've noticed that frown lines are definitely less visible. Active, clean skincare that delivers? A new staple in this editor's bathroom! www.renskincare.com

Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child

Tamra Davis met Jean-Michel Basquiat when he was only 21 years old, and she says he "definitely looked different." It was not far to long before the both started to bond over filmmaking, going out to movies and making there own reviews. Davis at that time was just a gallery assistant and was attending film school and pretty soon started filming him, and then Jean-Michel asked her if she could make a film about him.

Throughout the mid-80's Tamra filmed the artist in the studio painting, she recalls "Every time I was with him-and anybody will tell you this-he was always was working. He would be drawing at the restaurant; he would be painting."

Then in 1988 news broke out that Jean-Michel Basquiat passed away. And, Tamra Davis feeling bad and in mourning felt uncomfortable to do anything with the footage, and put it away and forgot about it. But in 2005, with the help of friends she returned to the 80's footage to make a 20 minute tribute. When the late artists friends and fans saw it they all flipped out! So Davis developed the short into a feature-length documentary with Arthouse Films, Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child.

The film just had its New York premiere at Moma during the Tribeca Film Festival. Injecting passion for the late artists legendary charisma. Which was propelled into culture during the late 70's, making everyone wanting a piece of him.

Jean-Michel Basquiat was a Cult-Figure, inspiring us then and now.

The Oyster Card Wallet

It has happen to us and to you. Waiting for the bus only to be turned away, walking to the tube gates only to have everyone held up.

London based creative team David Bruno and Tom Seymour have invented this neat little concept for London commuters.

"With the Oyster Card Wallet you’ll know how much credit you have on your card at all times, at a glance. It’s a simple idea that will help the underground work a little more efficiently."
The duo have been in talks with TfL and want to go back with a petition of support to make this idea happen. So if you like it, and want one one day, please help their cause by clicking 'like' on this link .
