Singing In The Rain

The quintessence of British clothing most commonly derives from the weather, look a Burberry's trademark gabardine fabric, or Barbour waxed jackets and Hunter wellingtons: all of which, were developed to keep ourselves dry in the torrential British downpours.

A new British classic encapsulating the very heart of English cheer is set to emerge on the market London Undercover founder Jamie Milestone has creating some hearty umbrellas for us all to protect ourselves with.

The umbrella - something of a necessity whilst inhabiting anywhere in Britain - yet something of a bore to be seen carrying. NOT anymore: Milestone, using his penchant for quirky kitsch imagery has developed gingham umbrellas, lined with a full english breakfast. If you don't fancy breakfast, then have a fish and chip dinner, not hungry? Then quiver beneath monochrome dogtooth, the list of designs is not endless, but is very long.

FINALLY, an umbrella can be an accessory again.

Prices are from £20-£40, available from Liberty.

British Fashion Council Announce NEWGEN MEN Recipients For Spring/Summer 2011!

Since its original incarnation of the single “MAN” show on the LFW schedule; The British Fashion Council’s designer support initiative NEWGEN MEN, sponsored by Topman, has successfully expanded throughout the years to now include catwalk shows, presentations and installations.

The scheme, which is instrumental in raising the profile of new British designers by offering them business support and showcasing opportunities at the dedicated Menswear day at London Fashion Week; has helped support some of the most innovative names in men’s fashion today.

This morning, the council announced their hotly anticipated list of recipients of NEWGEN MEN Spring/Summer 2011,  which are as follows:

Presentation Sponsorship:
Carolyn Massey, Lou Dalton and SIBLING.

As the number of designers receiving NEWGEN MEN support has risen from four to ten; this is, without any doubt, testament to the growing interest and strength of menswear talent in the UK today. Says Tim Blanks, Contributing Editor, Style.com and a member of the British Fashion Council's Menswear Committee;

“Menswear is on the move all over the world. It's almost as though some kind of group mind dictated that here was an opportunity to do something new, and that seems to have sparked the creativity of young designers. London has a long and honourable tradition of breeding this species, so there's an air of inevitability about the coming together of medium and talent under the menswear umbrella. That air is thickened by the knowledge that London is also, in many ways, the home of men's fashion as we know it. Which means that the menswear community here embraces all sorts, from the Savile Row traditionalist to the Hackney rebel, with a platoon of jewellers, hatters, knitters and cobblers as artisanal satellites. We're at that protean turning point where no one knows what happens next, though everyone knows what they'd LIKE to happen. Yes, there are boomlets in men's fashion in other cities, but none with quite the personality, the appetite, the APTITUDE of London. The tribe is ready for the world. And, after Paris, the world will be ready for the tribe - if it knows what's good for it.”

Judging from the latest collections from these NEWGEN MEN designers; we have a lot to look forward to this Spring. For more- Click here.

A Closer Look- James Long AW10

This past week, 7thMan visited the LONDON show ROOMS in New York!! The British Fashion Council's international design initiative to bring London's leading emerging fashion talents across the pond, to increase their presence and develop their businesses internationally.

One who came along for the ride was of course James Long, a designer who brought innovation in every piece. Nothing but special to get a closer look, to see all the details or even better to have on! The knits were a big hit from the beginning, cozy and edgy. A print that made a statement, and jackets that carried rabbit-hair to velvet. Fantastic gloves one did not notice before, along with other accessories that made the collection complete.

Images speak for themselves.

A Closer Look-Tim Soar AW 10

A collection that truly embodies "Simplicity at its best," as we both agreed. Tim Soar explained that his focus was on the details, and how he could make them traditional.

7thMan says he has succeeded in his mission for the coming fall. With a motorcycle jacket made of cord, cropped tops with leather trims, that can be pared with classic trousers. Soar brought the victorian silhouette back that can be seen through the blazers, with slimmer sides and darts exposed for quality. A camel over-coat stood out simple, but perfect for the trend of the year...
